Richard Scott
(1968 -)
Richard Scott was born in 1968 in Middlesbrough, England. However he is considered a South African artist whom resides in Cape Town and is well known for the phrase ‘Naive meets Pop art’ which describes his unique take on art. Scott has even had numerous group shows under this label. He is very well known both in South Africa and internationally.
Scott matriculated in 1986 from Norkem Part High School in Kempton Park, Gauteng. It was only in 2001 that Scott decided to become a full-time artist. In 2004 he got involved with Mark Atwood, at the Lithography Artist Press in Mpumalanga, South Africa, and later in 2008 he studied silk screening with Keip Silk Screening in Johannesburg.
Scott’s work is very distinctive in the sense of his constant use a thick black line in all of his work. His subject matter ranges from the female figure to cats, cars, lighthouses, and planes. He usually uses pencil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic, oil, lithography, etching, sculpture, new media, and photography to create his work. A lot of Scott’s work is sold outside South Africa. There are specific art collectors in Europe who own at least 75% of the 2,500 paintings he has produced in the last 10 years.
